ISLANDS by Eric Great-Rex, a new edition available here from The Multiple Store
First shown at the London Art Fair in January, we are pleased to now present here, Eric Great-Rex‘ Islands, a series of ceramic tiles where the artist plays with the idea of metaphorical islands and the enigmatic territory of emotions and feelings. The islands of Anger and Regret are the possible unspoken or unrecognised areas within masculinity that we might find difficult to visit. The islands of Luck and Desire are the islands we all might want to land and spend time on.
About the origin of Islands the artist has written
Recently I watched a TV programme called ‘The Island’ hosted by the adventurer Bear Grylls. Thirteen British men were abandoned on an uninhabited Pacific island, and they had to fend for themselves with only the clothes they were wearing and some basic tools. As I watched this social experiment, to see if men can recapture their primeval instincts, I started to think that learning how to articulate the tricky and murky waters of established behaviours and attitudes could possibly be a more productive exploration of what it is to be a man. Maybe all the men could be equipped with an emotional compass to keep them moving in the right direction.
