Recreating The Pastoral by Yinka Shonibare MBE at VISUAL, Carlow, Ireland until 19 June
In an exhibition that runs until the 19th of June, VISUAL the multi-disciplinary arts centre in Carlow, Ireland Recreating The Pastoral brings together a ra series of installations where Yinka Shonibare MBE has juxtaposed elements of elaborate 18th and 19th century European dress and courtly behaviour with contemporary political sensitivities expressed through his use for Dutch wax cotton cloth, itself a culturally ambitious material replete with a colonial history of appropriation. Yinka Shonibare MBE, a Turner Prize nominee, created an edition for The Multiple Store, Kaleidoscope in which the artist playfully explores gender stereotypes and power relations. A kaleidoscope in the shape of a phallus, with the body beautifully decorated in the Dutch wax batik patterns the artist is known for, and the head made of highly polished brass.
