This edition is part of the artist’s continuing fascination with meteorites. In recent years she has been the shadowy presence behind a number of mysterious meteorite landings; she has ground and incinerated them in exploding rockets in fireworks displays in Copenhagen, Boston, Birmingham, Milan and Edinburgh. She hopes one day to place a Martian meteorite on the moon, and a piece of the moon on planet Mars.
For her second edition for The Multiple Store, ‘Meteorite lands…in the middle of nowhere’, Cornelia Parker created a series of meteorite ‘landings’ made by heating a 400 year-old iron meteorite which originally fell on Namibia, and then using it to scorch impact craters on six road maps of the American south, hitting or missing locations she has never visited but which have achieved mythic status in her mind.
Missing: Waco (Texas); Roswell (New Mexico); Truth or Consequences (New Mexico)
Hitting: Bagdad (Louisiana); Bethlehem (North Carolina); Paris (Texas)

The edition has an interesting history. The artist gave this quote when the edition was launched in 2001 (but before 9/11):
“One of the biggest threats to the future of the planet is obliteration by a giant meteor. The meteorite has become the embodiment of fear of the unknown, although the earth is littered with them”
The artist referred back to this quote when she was interviewed in 2002:
“But of course that was before 11 September. Now you look at these maps and you think that because of the destruction a bomb might have landed. It’s weird that the piece has changed in the few months since it was made”
A small Texan town, immortalised by a film of the same name, directed by Wim Wenders and written by Sam Shepard.
Not the former home of the notorious Saddam Hussein, but a tiny community in the middle of nowhere.
Bethlehem, North Carolina
Not the birthplace of Jesus, but a tiny place in the middle of nowhere.
Roswell, New Mexico
Famous for the Roswell Incident of 1947 when a UFO was alleged to have crashed nearby. The Army Air Forces, after first announcing a flying saucer had been found, later tried to deny it (details http://www.roswellufomuseum.com/).
Notorious for the death of 75 members of a religious community of Branch Davidians, after a raid by the US Defence Department and ATF on their barricaded quarters.
Truth or Consequences, New Mexico
Originally known as Hot Springs, changed its name to Truth or Consequences in 1950 in honour of a famous TV Quiz show.
