Karen Ay: Terra Infirma

Quick overview:

Edition of 35

Terra Infirma reflects the artist’s on-going interest in notions of identity, nation-ness and human geography. An increased ability to communicate and move around the planet has dissolved boundaries, both physical and imagined, and in this work, the idea of fixed identity is challenged and reconsidered.

About the Edition

The contents of a pocket world atlas, hand cut into tiny pieces, are contained in a glass sphere that rotates. The fragments overlap, intermingle and scatter, creating incongruous associations and connections as they circulate. Localities, once easily defined, become fluid; our understanding of territory is disrupted, reinterpreted, redistributed, repositioned.

Terra Infirma reflects the artist’s on-going interest in notions of identity, nation-ness and human geography. An increased ability to communicate and move around the planet has dissolved boundaries, both physical and imagined, and in this work, the idea of fixed identity is challenged and reconsidered.
