Kaleidoscope-5_1Yinka Shonibare MBE

KALEIDOSCOPE, 2014. Edition: 45

Cast brass, digitally printed cotton, lacquer, mirror, lens, glass, perspex, oil

Intended by the artist as both a ‘playful piece’ as well as a serious comment on male patriarchy, within this beautifully constructed kaleidoscope Shonibare has subverted the familiar image of Botticelli’s THE BIRTH OF VENUS by replacing the female nude with a photograph of a well-endowed naked male.

Corinne Felgate's Baby's Got the Wedgwood Blues on a mantelpieceCorinne Felgate

BABY’S GOT THE WEDGWOOD BLUES, 2014. Edition: 30

Flock on ceramic

This new edition draws on the heyday of Stoke-on-Trent’s iconic Wedgwood pottery, as well as its more recent demise, in an attempt to visualise a future potential for one of Britain’s last industrial heritage brands.

The flocked surface of the sculptures draws on Wedgwood’s lust for experimentation with surface colour and texture, and has been painstakingly matched to Wedgwood’s classic blues used on the Jasperware collections, which in turn endeavoured to emulate the tones and forms utilised on the roman artefacts he was so inspired by.

Yinka Shonibare MBE in conversation with Iwona Blazwick, Director of the Whitechapel Gallery at Multiplied Editions Fair

Yinka Shonibare MBE was In Conversation with Iwona Blazwick, Director of the Whitechapel Gallery on Friday 17th October at Multiplied Art Fair, Christie’s South Kensington where the public launch of KALEIDOSCOPE, our latest edition has taken place.

A video of the talk is now available via this link.

About the Edition

Yinka ShonibareKALEIDOSCOPE by Yinka Shonibare MBE is a new limited edition of 45. Described by Yinka as ‘a piece that playfully explores gender stereotypes and power relations’, it is a kaleidoscope in the shape of a phallus, with the body beautifully decorated in the Dutch wax batik patterns Yinka is known for, and the head made of highly polished brass. Through the opening at the head of the phallus a distorted image of Sandro Botticelli’s ‘Birth of Venus’ can be seen. Botticelli’s original image depicted the birth of Venus, the goddess of the sea, standing on a shell. Subverting this familiar image, Yinka has replaced the female nude by a photograph of a well-endowed male. Click here for more information on this edition.

To order online, please click here, or visit The Multiple Store stand at MULTIPLIED Editions Fair hosted by Christie’s (17-20 October) where KALEIDOSCOPE  will have its public launch . Admission Free.
